The Role Of Trade Unions In Promoting Medical Ethics And Professional Pedagogy In Medical Universities
1. The Importance of Ethical Values in the Context of University Autonomy
In medical education, lecturers shoulder a “dual responsibility”: they are both teachers and physicians. Under university autonomy, facing the pressures of market mechanisms and financial constraints, upholding professional ethics becomes more critical than ever. The Resolution of the 13th Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union emphasizes that building a workforce of morally upright, culturally refined workers, officials, and employees is a core mission for sustainable development.
2. Aligning Trade Union Activities with Directive 05 on Studying and Following the Ideology, Ethics, and Style of Ho Chi Minh
The implementation of Directive 05 in some units has sometimes been formalistic, focusing heavily on theoretical reports without sufficiently integrating the practical characteristics of the medical–pharmaceutical field. Medical lecturers, with their demanding schedules (balancing teaching and clinical duties), often find it difficult to participate in traditional political learning sessions.
- Translating learning content into practical behavioral standards: The Trade Union converts the themes of Directive 05 into specific behavioral norms such as “Dedication at the operating table,” “Empathy for patients,” and “Responsibility toward students.” Learning is integrated into professional activities, case discussions, and clinical teaching.
- Digitalizing learning materials: The Trade Union develops short video bulletins and podcasts featuring President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings on medicine and education, disseminated via internal platforms to allow staff to listen and reflect during brief breaksbetween clinical shifts.
3. Promoting Professional Pedagogy (“Sư đạo”) and Medical Ethics (“Y đức”) in Clinical Teaching
The pressures of autonomy may push lecturers to focus more on revenue‑generating services or research indicators, while neglecting the ethical formation of students through personal role modeling. Teacher–student relationships in clinical settings may also become overly administrative.
- Movement: “Each Lecturer as a Model of Medical Skills and Medical Ethics”: The Trade Union launches emulation movements promoting proper professional conduct in teaching hospitals. Lecturers are encouraged not only to teach clinical knowledge but also to demonstrate compassion, respectful communication, and ethical behavior through their interactions with patients in front of students.
- Forum: “Medical Ethics in the Digital Era”: Organizing discussions on emerging ethical challenges such as patient data confidentiality, the use of AI in diagnostics, and the professional conduct of healthcare providers on social media.
4. Honoring and Spreading Exemplary Role Models
Many lecturers and physicians quietly devote themselves to patients and students, sacrificing personal time, yet their contributions often go unrecognized. Awards sometimes emphasize degrees or publications over humanitarian values.
- Awards “Compassionate Heart” and “Silent Ferryman”: The Trade Union establishes dedicated awards honoring lecturers with outstanding contributions to charity work, care for disadvantaged patients, or support for struggling students.
- Developing the “Stories of the Medical Profession” Album: Using the organization’s social media platforms, the Trade Union shares real stories of exemplary individuals within the institution. These stories not only express gratitude but also serve as vivid ethical lessons for younger union members and students.
5. Alignment with the Perspective of the 13th Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union
The Resolution affirms: “Building a cultural workplace and cultural institution.” In medical universities, this cultural environment is defined by the intersection of a teacher’s ethics and a physician’s conscience.
- In terms of method: The Trade Union does not “lecture” on ethics but cultivates ethics through humanistic and value‑based activities.
- In terms of objectives: The goal is to build a community of medical intellectuals who are not only professionally competent (“chuyên”) but also ethically exemplary (“hồng”), meeting the demands of serving the people in the new era.
Promoting “Y đức” and “Sư đạo” is a defining mission of Trade Unions in medical universities. Amid the turbulence of autonomy and market pressures, the Trade Union acts as an “anchor” to preserve essential humanistic values. Effectively carrying out this mission not only strengthens the institution’s reputation and brand but also contributes to nurturing generations of physicians who possess both compassion and competence for society.
